  • Oscar Hijuelos was the first Latino American writer to win a Pulitzer Prize for fiction.
  • Sandra Cisneros was the first Chicana writer to have her work published with a major (mainstream) publishing house, when Vintage Press published her novel The House on Mango Street and Randomhouse backed her novel Woman Hollering Creek.
